A summary of side effects

Side effects are a common problem with drug development. There is some evidence that torasemide, which is marketed under the name Furosemide, may have more serious side effects than other drugs. There have been several case reports of death following treatment with torasemide in patients on chronic heart failure. In this case report, we asked the participants to rate their experiences with adverse reactions experienced by the placebo, torasemide, and furosemide groups.

Most participants (60%) had mild to moderate, but moderate or poor responses to therapy. The most common adverse reactions reported were edema, abdominal pain, and diaphoresis. More than half (47%) of the participants had experienced at least 1 adverse reaction in the previous 6 months.

Common side effects (≥1%) included dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, gastrointestinal upset, thrombosis, hyperkalemia, and peripheral edema. Very rarely, side effects (≥2%) included headache, taste loss, dizziness, muscle pain, hypotension, and vasculitclerosis.

The most common (≥2%) serious adverse effects (≥3%) included hypotension, peripheral oedema, and thrombosis.

The rarest (≤3%) serious (≤2%) and the very rarest (≤2%) serious (≤1%) adverse effects were hypotension, peripheral oedema, thrombosis, and thrombosisushed. The most frequently reported conditions were nephrotic syndrome, respiratory failure, and peripheral oedema.
